Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying such medications should be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural management.
